The original original one, as a basically feral child, I of course chewed apart the antennae, the rubbery white teeth, even the saddle. I loved that thing. Now at some point later on, that glove monster living with me through all of my life, I ended up finding a half-broken one at a garage sale and was able to replace the gnarled parts. Also I painted the tongue red, which I didn't end up liking, but oh well. And then that one ended up disappearing somewhere along the line, either lost in a move or whatever, and I bought another one online, with the missing Skulk figure atop (the spider-glove is named Trancula). That one ended up going missing, I think with a box that didn't make it to England. So now, I've bought a third one, third time's the charm! Now, this Skulk didn't come with all of the accessories (the last one at least had the insect wing spear thing). It actually didn't come with any accessories, I ended up doing a second ebay purchase to get two swords (strangely), a spare harness, the box (kinda cool), and more importantly (aside from the swords), the mini comic book! So those are treasured items returned to my collection (the comic you can read here [sectaurs.com]), and I was happy. Except... this can be improved. His holster is empty! Sure, he has two swords, but... but he had a... spear? I think from my research, that heart thing is supposed to be a spear, and a shield! So it started with a shield. I still had some large chainmaille scales, so I glued a few of those together, and used wire and JB-Weld (good ol' JB-Weld) to form a grip for Skulk to grab onto. But... I still had some epoxy left! Ummm, ok, ok, let's kinda halfway form the pistol shape out of that bit, why not, let's give him a ranged attack. And in the midst of that, I went back into my childhood again, a little bit. Back in the day, I used to make accessories for my toys by hammering a nail flat on the back of a table vice, vaguely sharpening it, and using whatever tape was around (usually electrical tape) to bulk up the grip. I decided to give a nod back to that, and though I didn't have any nails around, I did have coathanger wire, which is mild steel wire of about the right diameter! So in going back to my favourite "sword" that I made back then, I created a sickle shape (we had scythes all over the place growing up), but a bit longer to turn it into a sickle-spear! Yah, that sounds like something young me would have come up with lol. So we hammered the sickle end and spear end flat (except here just on an old rusty plate of steel on the grass), but this time, also to better bulk out the back of the shield and laser pistol (all cartoons had laser pistols lol), I used that JB-Weld again. We made all the grips the right size, and then carved some decorative linework into all of the things, and... WOOH, we have accessories! Am I gonna paint it, nah. The original accessories were all a single colour, paint would just rub off, and this actually matches pretty good anyway! And it's simple, rough, pretty much like I would have done when I was 10. Added bonus tho, I did balance the sickle-spear around the main shaft, so that it would (in theory) throw straight! And they came out awesome, and it looks cool clipped to the back of Skulk's harness, and the holster is full when he puts his sword away, and I am happy, WOOH! A quick several day build reliving my childhood a little bit. Also as an addendum to the story, in the first pic, we have the ORIGINAL original Battle Beetle toy with Pinsor riding him, that somehow did survive through to the present! I think this was my brother Greg's toy, that somehow landed in my lap over the decades, and I'm guessing that Bitaur (who would normally come with Zak) was the one my other brother Charles got, but I've had Bitey as my own ever since childhood, so maybe Chaz gave him to me way back then? Also a prized childhood toy, but I think that's the second iteration of Bitaur in my collection. A little bit of the trio of all of us closely-aged siblings together (my other sisters were much older, but I've got ot Finished January 2, 2026 ![]() |
